Interview: Georgea Blakey – hoping to represent Switzerland at Eurovision

Georgea Blakey was born in London but is half Danish and half German.  She is hoping to represent Switzerland at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.  Here she talks to EuroVisionary about her song, Get Over You, which is not the real title, and her Eurovision hopes.

Hello Georgea, first of all can you tell us about yourself and your background. Where are you from? How long have you been singing?

I was born in London to a half Danish mother and half German father. I have been singing and song writing for 20 years ever since I was a teenager. I have been in various unsuccessful bands in the UK and USA over the years! I have played in many a pub and club but also some great venues such as Ronnie Scotts and the Troubadour.

How did you get involved with the Switzerland Eurovision selection this year?

My song, Why were you sent to me, mistakenly labelled by my producer as Get Over You is a real power ballad that I wrote in the throes of a hideous break up! It is all about why someone amazing comes into your life to turn it around only for it to come crashing down again when they show their true colours! I sometimes wonder why people are sent to us! I guess we must learn from our mistakes and just make sure we try our best to get over them ASAP. Dwelling on the past doesn’t do any good at all.

Do you watch Eurovision? Do you have any favourite songs from Eurovision?

Yes, Eurovision is a superb 4 hours or so of sheer entertainment. As a song writer I am always more interested in the lyrics than most!

Who are your musical influences?

Amongst many others I am influenced by The Eagles,Elton John and Joni Mitchell. I am also nuts about Country Music and regularly make song writing trips to Nashville.

What would it mean to you to represent Switzerland at Eurovision?

I know that there are a huge amount of entries this year and my chances are slim but to represent Switzerland would mean the world to me as I am so in love with the country and its beautiful scenery.

Finally, is there a question I have not asked you that you would like to ask your self, and is so what would your answer be? It would be "what memories of Switzerland do I have already?"

I first learnt to ski on a school trip to Les Collons when I was 13. I knocked my instructor over and ended up head first in a stream but it didn’t dampen my spirits! I have also visited St Moritz and Verbier and my best friend lives in Zurich so I often pop over to see her.
