EuroVisionary has talked to the Spanish representatives at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, D’Nash, about their new album called Garabatos, their promo tour, how their experience was in Helsinki, their musical influences… and much more.
What plans do you have to promote the album? Now you are on tour in Spain and you were also in Finland last week. Are you planning on visiting and promoting Garabatos in other European countries? Do you have any special memories of the places you have visited?
Of course we will travel to every country that we’re invited to. As you just said, we just arrived back from Finland and we will go to Sweden in a few weeks. We love travelling abroad and we would be very happy to see all our fans around the world. We will never forget all the wonderful experiences that we have everytime we travel but if we have to choose one (apart from Eurovision in Finland) we would say the night tours in the mountains of Malta.
What can people expect at your live concerts?
We love doing live concerts, it is one of the best aspects of our job. Obviously in our concerts we will present our new album, Garabatos, but we will remember some of our other songs from past albums, we will make some all –time tributes, lots of fun, romantic moments, and surprises for everyone to have the best time ever. A complete show for the whole audience.
You wrote some songs for your previous albums and you have worked writing hits for other artists. On this new album, most of the songs are composed by you. Is this a little more personal album? Are you still writing for other artists?
For sure: singing your own songs is an amazing experience. As you feel every single word you say, it touches you personally. We have had the possibility of writing 8 of the 15 songs. This last album is our most personal album and we are really proud of all of the songs that are on it. Garabatos is personal in every way, from the inside to the outside. Right now we are very busy with our promotion and tour but we hope to continue writing soon.
What is your favorite song or your favorite lyrics from Garabatos?
It is very difficult to choose precisely between all of the songs that we have included. But we would say: La Soledad (Javi), En Medio De La Calle (Basty) and Volver A Empezar (Mikel).
On your album we can find a DVD that is a walk through D’Nash history: from your coming together and the phenomenal career of the group to nowadays. The documentary called Esa Mitad De Mí shows you how you really are but, how are you really?
We are really as you see us in the documentary. We love being together, we enjoy every moment of our career, we laugh, we cry, we argue, we embrace, we work together, we party together… we value every step we live.
On your website you are involved in projects like D’Nash Radio or D’Nash Mania TV where you share your experiences and your fans can also submit their questions to you and you answer them. Do you think that being active on social media sites is essential to your musical success?
Totally, time and music change, as new technologies also change. Internet is a really big window and thanks to internet there is a lot of people that listen to our music. With D’Nash Radio and D’Nash Mania TV, we are able to connect with all our fans and answer all their questions directly. It is a fun way of letting everyone to see a bit more of our lives.
What did you get out of appearing in Eurovision? What did you learn from the experience?
It was an amazing experience. We learned a lot of things as a group, we had an amazing time. Thanks to Eurovision we have 23 fanclubs in 23 different countries. It was definitely the most important accomplishment in our music career and we would most certainly love to repeat it.
What did you enjoy the most from the Eurovision experience?
Being able to perform in such a big and important contest representing our country.
And if you got the chance to do it again, what would you do differently?
That is a hard question! Haha. We think that maybe it would be a good idea of going with a song written by us.
Do you keep in touch with any of the other finalists from the 2007 Misión Eurovisión such as Mirela or Yanira Figueroa?
Of course. Apart from wonderful artists they are really nice people. We have good relations with everybody from Misión Eurovisión, especially Yanira.
Many people will probably compare you to boybands like Backstreet Boys and Take That. Can you tell us what separates you from them?
I don’t think we’ve ever compared ourselves with such groups. Mostly it has been the public and media that have always called us a boyband. For us it has been a pleasure to compare us with such important groups but the term “boyband” should be analyzed. Of course we are 3 guys, of course we do harmonies and we dance. But I think that we always tend to compare things, and Take That is Take That, whom we admire, BSB are BSB, whom we also feel a lot of respect for, but D’Nash is also D’Nash, we are ourselves, with our lyrics, with our music.
Who are your musical influences, and if you could perform a song with anyone, who would it be?
We listen to a lot of different kinds of music. We love pop, R&B, soul, rock even classical music or flamenco. Only naming a few artist we would say, Michael Jackson, Alejandro Sanz, Pink, Jessie J, Reik, Camila, Vanesa Martin… etc. We would love to sing with Luis Fonsi.
Do you have a special song that symbolizes or represents you as a group?
Obviously, our first single Capaz De Todo was really important to us. But En Medio De La Calle is our new single, the start of a new era and we will never get bored of singing it. It is a great song.
You have been together as a band for quite some years. If you were to sum up that period with a few key words, what would they be?
We would say friendship, intensity and dream.
Besides music, what other interests do you have?
We also love acting, we would love to make a movie or a musical.
Which question, that I haven’t asked you would you like to ask yourself and what would your answer to it be?
