Paolo Meneguzzi opens the Sanremo Festival

Paolo Meneguzzi, Switzerlands choice to represent them in Belgrade, last night performed in Sanremo during the first night of the festival.

He had the honour of opening the 58th festival in the Teatro Ariston, the home of the festival since 1977. It moved there from its original home in the famous Casino until the festival became too big and had to be moved to a specialist venue.

The Ariston was RAI’s original choice to host the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest. However, the first Gulf war made the security arrangements impossible due to its very provincial location and so the contest was moved to Rome
