Saturday evening the Danish TV viewers picked Emmelie de Forest to represent their country at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The contest has always been popular in Denmark and this year was no exception where the contest was seen by the highest number of viewers since 2010.
With a population of only little over 5 million people not many countries can match the high viewing figures DR often receives for their national final, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. This year the final was seen by 1.785.000, which is the highest since 2010, where approximately 100.000 more were watching Chanée and N’evergreen win with the song In A Moment Like This.
In 2002 the viewing figures for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix was just over 2 million, which is the highest since 2000. When the Olsen Brothers won in 2000 the Danish interest for the national final and the Eurovision Song Contest was at its lowest. People were talking about Denmark maybe deciding not to participate anymore so the Danish victory with Fly On The Wings Of Love came at just the right time. The interest again went up and aside from 1.3 million watching in 2008 the viewing figures for the national final has recently been rather stable between 1.6 and 1.8 million.
The Danish final furthermore recieved a good rating of #4 on a scale from 1-5, with 5 being the highest. Most watched TV programme in Denmark the past week was one of the semi-final at the World Championsship in Hanball for men. A semi-final between Denmark and Croatia, which started just before the dress rehearsal for the Danish final had ended. But afterwards the second half of the match was put up on the big screen in the press centre – and for about an hour all the journalists covering Dansk Melodi Grand Prix had turned into screaming and shouting handball fans all following the Danish handball team beating Croatia and securing themselves a place in the final.
In the half hour up until Dansk Melodi Grand Prix started half an hour warm up programme was broadcasted. This was seen by 883.000 and receieved a rating of 3.4.
