The Eurovision Song Contest just ended and the FIFA World Cup just started, but we have a connection in terms of an unofficial World Cup song. A group of students from Münster in Westphalia, called Uwu Lena, made a cover version of this year’s Eurovision winner Satellite by Lena Meyer-Landrut. The song is now called Schland o Schland.
Indeed the word Schland has no meaning. It is simply an abbreviation of Deutschland (Germany). The word was created by no one else than Stefan Raab in his TV show TV Total. But Stefan Raab is not responsible for the cover version. Record company EMI Music Publishing Hamburg is not delighted about this
song because they have the rights of Lena Meyer-Landrut’s version. They
have consulted their lawyer as the group Uwu Lena has no permission to
cover Satellite.
The video clip of Schland o Schland was made within one hour. It was recorded in a park in Münster. The lyricist of this version is Moritz Schefers. Originally the video was made available at their own website, they then deleted it after pressure from the recond company, but the song is to be found elsewhere like on Youtube.
EMI will now get into discussions with John Gordon and Julie Frost, the songwriters of Satellite. After that we will know more about how it will go on with Schland o Schland.
The lyrics of Schland o Schland (translated from German):
2006, I switch on TV
The World Cup in our own country
Coloured flags in the hand
A summer fairytale, olé
Then in Switzerland and Austria
The same pictures on the streets
A fresh summerparty
I believe, I understand
Schland o Schland
We are enthusiastic about you
That is why we already celebrate with you today
Like a World champion
In South Africa, yes,
everybody wants to know it there
But this year, we only celebrate
Come on, let’s go to South Africa
To play football – of course
From Cape Town to Pretoria
Via Johannesburg and Bloemfontein.
Zakumi shows himself gallant
He even wears pants
But today we need everyone
To stand closely behind you
Schland o Schland,
We are enthusiastic about you
That is why we already celebrate with you today
Like a World champion
In South Africa, yes,
everybody wants to know it there
But this year, we only celebrate
A fairytale, what a dream!
Only football?
No, no, I don’t believe this
And today everybody celebrates with us
Angie*, the Kaiser**
Even the Pope, maybe a bit more quiet
Step by step
We approach to the title
We all know, what we could do
Lena somehow showed you to
Even if you don’t bring that cup with you
We’re gonna love you either way!
Schland o Schland,
We are enthusiastic about you
That is why we already celebrate with you today
Like a World champion
In South Africa, yes,
everybody wants to know it there
But this year, we only celebrate
*Angie is the nickname of the German chancellor Angela Merkel
** Kaiser (the emperor) is the nickname of the German football legend Franz Beckenbauer
