Alexa will participate tonight in the Romanian national selection with the song Baby. She is hoping to get the ticket to Oslo to represent Romania at the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest. Alexa speaks to EuroVisionary about her career and hopes for the future.
Hi Alexa, congratulations on making it to the Romanian national selection. Could you tell us something about your song?
Thank you so much. Well actually this year it was different than last year because I did not sign for the competition with any song. I was called from Mihai Alexandru that had a song accepted into the competition but because his lead singer did not have Romanian citizenship, he was asked to change the vocal. That’s when he called me because we’ve worked together before. That’s how I got the chance to sing the song Baby. He has been in the Eurovision competition before with romanian singer Nicola, in 2004.
Are you planning any tv or radio promotion for the song?
I have been promoting the song a lot. Almost everyday recently, I was going to several shows where I presented the song.
Could you tell us about your previous participation in the Romanian national selection in 2009?
Last year I was actually with my first participation in the Romanian Eurovision semi finals and I was very excited . I had two songs in the competition that I had to prepare in almost 3 weeks. But I managed to do ok.
You participated in Megastar (a Romanian show like X Factor or Idols). Please tell us about this experience and what placing you achieved?
Megastar was a real challenge for me and a wonderful experience. I made a lot of friends there and I got to see how strong I could be, because you really need a thick skin to survive in showbiz. I also grew as a singer. I got 3rd place in the contest. I got the highest pointage from the jury throughout the contest. I thank them for their appreciation.
What were some of the songs that you performed on Megastar?
I performed a lot of beautiful songs from Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, Anastacia, Shania Twain , even Abba, just to name a few. My favourite moment was when I sang I Wish I Was A Punkrocker from Sandi Thom?
Have you watched the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years and do you have a favourite Eurovision song?
I am a sort of Eurovision fan although I didn’t really get to see the whole contest every year. I know the Eurovision winners. I have some favourite songs like Abba Waterloo, Dima Bilan Believe and Ruslana Wild Dances. I also liked last year’s 2nd place song by Yohanna Is It True? and Ani Lorak with Shady Lady.
Do you have a favourite Romanian Eurovision song?
I really liked Luminita Anghel & Sistem with Let Me Try and from Romanian selections, Holograf Dincolo De Nori and even last year’s The Balkan Girls from Elena Gheorghe, just to name a few. I think all the Romanian contestants throughout the Eurovision contest had great songs.
Who are your musical influences?
I am ecclectic. I listen a lot of music, from pop to rock, from r’n’b to soul or jazz. I admit I like pop rock more, it gives me a lot of energy.
Can we expect an album from you soon?
Hopefully this year I’ll release a single and i’ll do the album as soon as I can. I have to talk with my label and see what’s going to happen.
What question that I have not asked you would you like to ask yourself and what would your answer be?
Well…let me see. I guess the question would be, What do you want most from your life? and my answer is to keep doing what I love to do and make the world a better place.
Thank you, Alexa. Good luck in the Romanian final this weekend.
