SVT launched the rules for Melodifestivalen 2011. The big news here are that SVT will hand-pick 15 instead of 4 songs, 15 song will be picked by a jury and 2 songs will be selected by the web wild card. Foreign song composers are also now allowed to submit their entries – if they have written the song with at least one swedish composer.
Since 2004 we have seen a system with 4 wild cards which mean that SVT invites 4 performers to take part in the competition. The other 28 entries has been selected by a jury. Last year we was also saw the introduction of the web wild card (web joker) which meant that people could submit their own written & sung songs to SVT. After that the entries could be seen on SVT’s website, and a winner was chosed by SMS-voting. The winning song was given one of the 32 places in the semi final of Melodifestivalen.
This year SVT will invite and select 15 songs instead of just 4.
15 other songs will be picked by a jury and 2 songs will be picked through the web wild card.
Another change is that foreign composers are also allowed to enter the competition. They have to write the song together with at least one swedish composer.
September 21st is the last date to submit entries for next years edition of Melodifestivalen.
