SVT announces changes in the rules for Melodifestivalen 2012

Today SVT announced the full details about the rules of Melodifestivalen 2012. One of the news this year is that SVT will go back to a previously used system which means that there won’t be a song that goes straight to the final after the first round of voting anymore and when a semi final is over the winner of it won’t be revealed.

Melodifestivalen 2012 will just like the other years consist of four heats with eight performers in each heat:

– After the first voting round has finished the five songs with most televotes and SMS-votes will go through to the second round of voting (unlike in the last two years when one song directly went through to the final after the first round).

– When the the second round of voting has ended the two songs which collected the most votes will qualify to the final in Globen while the songs finishing 3rd and 4th will go to the second chance heat. The information about which of the songs that came 1st and 2nd or 3rd and 4th in each heat won’t be revealed until after the final (a system previously used in Melodifestivalen until 2009).

– All the votes from both the first and second round will count in the end (unlike in previous years when the voting numbers from the first round were back to zero when the second round started).

– The duels in the second chance
will be decided by a draw instead of being predetermined. It will be arranged so that a song that finished 3rd in one heat will be drawn against a song which finished 4th. Just like in the past years two songs will qualify to the final in Globen which will be held on the 10th of March.
