Malta Eurosong finalist, Eleanor Spiteri, speaks to EuroVisionary

Eleanor Spiteri will perform ‘Velvet Ocean’ in the Malta Eurosong final on 20 February 2010. Eleanor has previously performed in the Malta national final as part of the popular trio, Trilogy.  Eleanor speaks to EuroVisionary.

Hello Eleanor, first of all, congratulations on making it to the final of the Malta Eurosong.

You have previously taken part in the Malta Eurosong as part of the popular group, Trilogy. Your song at this year’s festival is a very different style to Trilogy’s music. Could you tell us something about your song, ‘Velvet Ocean’?

Yes, the style of the song is very different to Trilogy’s music. It was my idea to go for something different. I expressed my ideas to mstro. Paul Abela (composer of the song) and he came up with this uptempo but still, melodious and flowing song.

How have you been promoting your song in the run up the Eurosong?

The Public Broadcasting Authority has made sure that each and every song is promoted equally on the same television programme or station, so as to be fair with everyone.

Are you still a member of Trilogy and do you have any plans to record any new songs with them?

Trilogy are still together. This year we could not participate as one of the members of the group, Daniel Debono, is furthering his studies abroad. I am sure that when Daniel comes back, we will all be looking forward to resume our work together.

Do you have plans for a solo album?

I have always wished to do a solo album with my original songs. But right now I have got other priorities in my life.

Will you try to participate in any other music festival this year such as the Malta Indipendenza festival?

I only participate in the Maltasong for Europe festival. This is because I also like to give some time to musical theatre, which I love.

Who are your musical influences?

Beyonce Knowles is my idol. I adore the way she performs on stage, the way she speaks about music, and most of all, the way she sings her songs. Also, as I said before, I love musical theatre, so I admire artists like, Michael Ball, Elaine Page, and Lea Salonga.

Do you like to watch the Eurovision Song Contest? If so, do you have any favourite songs from the contest in previous years?

Yes, my family and I always watch the Eurovision Song Contest together. My most favourite songs are those of last year, which are ‘La Voix’ of Malena Emmann and ‘Is it True?’ of Yohanna.

Have you heard all of the 19 other songs in this year’s Malta Eurosong? Do you have any particular favourites amongst these songs?

Yes, I have heard them all. My favourie songs this year are ‘Moments’ of Dorothy Bezzina and ‘My Dream’ of Thea Garrett.

What question that I have not asked would you like to ask yourself, and what would your answer be?

What will happen to me after the festival maybe? Well, win or lose, it won’t change my life. I am a very happy person, and enjoy living my life to the full and making those around me, happy!!

Thank you, Eleanor. Lots of luck at the Eurosong on 20 February 2010
