The unforgettable hits from the band Mecano is the soundtrack of the show Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar. This is an entirely new production that immerses spectators in an overwhelming visual and audio atmosphere with a new director and a new cast where Daniel Diges plays the leading role.
Mecano was the most popular Spanish band in the 80s and their music was really innovative in a country which had just ended a long period of dictatorship. Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar, which means "Today I Can’t Get Up", was their debut single and they sold nearly ten million albums worldwide.
Now, the curtain rises again at the Coliseum Theatre to host this story of love, music and frienship with Mecano’s immortal soundtrack. It has been renewed after becoming the most successful musical in the Spanish history with more than 2,500,000 spectators. Eight years ago, in that first version of the musical, Daniel Diges, who represented Spain at the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, played the role of the co-star and he also worked in the children’s version of the show called En Tu Fiesta Me Colé.
Nowadays, Daniel plays the leading role as Mario, a young man who leaves his small town alongside his best friend named Colate. It is the early ’80s and they travel to the capital city of Madrid chasing a dream: to succeed in the music business. But Madrid is not what they thought and the city receives them with indifference and they have to barely survive with no work, no money, no manager, no record label… but they do not give up and they go on. After getting a job at a bar called "El 33" they met another couple of dreamers in search of fame: Guillermo and Panchi. The four of them make up a band called "Rulé" and, after winning a major music contest, they record their first single that launches their musical career to success. Along the way, several setbacks will happen and will test their friendship such as when Mario falls in love with María or when Colate gets involved with drugs.
The scenery is awesome with twenty-seven different sets and on the stage there are more than thirty people, including actors and dancers in a performance that takes just over three hours.
One of the great strengths of this new production is its technological prowess. The scenery and lighting joins a complex audiovisual system that includes a screen of 200 square meters which astonishes the audience creating a fantastic three-dimensional effect where the projections are almost perfectly integrated with the set and the actors’ movements.
The musical was premiered yesterday and it has already revolutionized the billboards in Madrid. It is a true reflection of the joy and lust for life that characterized the era in which is set and when you leave the theatre, you take with you a piece of the spirit of the 80s.
