Two years in a row out of the Eurovision final shows drops in Danish viewing figures

Compared to other countries, the Danish viewing figures are still impressively high, but missing out on the final two years in a row is now beginning to show in the viewing figures which are lower than last year, but still significantly higher than the lows in 2004 and 2007 where Denmark didn’t qualify for the final either.

In many ways 2015 and 2016 can be compared when it comes to Denmark. Both years the country sent what can be described as a boy band though neither Anti Social Media nor Lighthouse X will use it about themselves, and both years they failed to reach the final.

Last year, Denmark took part in the first semi-final which was seen by 931.000 and scored a viewer rating of 3,7 out of 5 as maximum. This year they were placed in the second semi-final which only reached 681.000 people, and also a rating of 3,7. That is a significant drop of 27% which shows that the Danish population didn’t have much faith in Lighthouse X making it to the final. In the days up to the semi-final basically all local media had written the country out as well so it didn’t come as any surprise in Denmark.

The first semi-final was also broadcast live on DR and seen by 438.000. Last year, the semi-final Denmark wasn’t in was seen by almost the same number 437.000 despite this being the second one and therefore it was already known at this time that Denmark was kicked out of the competition.

When a country isn’t taking part in the final, the viewing figures are naturally significantly lower, also in Denmark which reached its low point in 2007 where only 487.000 watched the final after DQ had been eliminated. Thank God, things didn’t go that bad this year although we do see a drop. Last year 814.000 watched the final which scored a viewer rating of 4,0. This year only 711.000 watched the show, and they gave it a satisfaction rating of 3,8.

The 2016 final became most seen programme in the week while the second semi-final was second most viewed. The first semi-final is placed at #17 on the top 20 over most seen programmes that week.

When comparing direct numbers to other countries have in mind that Denmark’s population is at 5,6 million.
