Eurovision 2013 day 5 – Croatia’s second rehearsal

Croatia took to the stage with the sextet Klapa S Mora – could we expect just as enchanting a performance as they treated us to on Monday? They seem to carry off the powerful vocals so effortlessly, so anticipation for their second rehearsal was high.

The six strong Klapa s Mora eerge from the shadows as the backdrop lights up with what looks like a night sky, with spotlights throwing beams everywhere, creating a really effective atmosphere. Paired with red and purple spots and lanters, the Croatians really have a superb setting. Wide panning shots show the stage off a treat.

They’re wearing the same costumes as in their first rehearsal, ie. black frock coats with gold piping detail. The main singer is the only one lit up to begin with, the others join in one after one. They don’t move around much, making the performance rather static, but they do stand in a semi circle formation which works well on screen, with plenty of engaging looks into the camera. The band members show very little interaction with one another however.

The rousing Mižerja is perfectly suited to their voices. It comes across as blissfully free of any gimmicks or special effects, giving their voices the opportunity to take centre stage. Their vocals combined are stunning to listen to. The performance visually however comes across as rather stiff – similar in style to Latvia’s Questa Notte from 2007, which didn’t exactly provide Latvia with the success they’d hoped for. Klapa s Mora are however vocally far stronger, so perhaps they will fare slightly better. On the whole, they should be very satisfied indeed with their second rehearsal today.
