Change of dates for 2010 contest?

The dates for the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest was announced at an EBU press conference in Moscow. Next year’s host broadcaster, NRK, has however asked for a change as the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 is going to overlap with the Champions League final.

While some Eurovision Song Contest fans will mean that this contest is more important than any football match then it is a fact that the UEFA Champions League final is such a major international TV event that it actually appears like a big mistake from EBU’s side. NRK has offically asked for a change of dates and this will be likely to happen as it is not in anyone’s interest to have the two things on the same evening, the 22nd of May.

While EBU hasn’t responded yet it seems almost certain that the Eurovision Song Contest final will either be held one week earlier on the 15th of May or one week later on the 29th of May. By having it one week earlier it the Norwegian constitution day, on the 17th of May, which is a public holiday and greatly celebrated doesn’t come in the way either – although the many foreigners travelling to the Eurovision Song Contest might enjoy this big celebration.

In my view

It seems like EBU simply didn’t check which other major TV events might have been scheduled for those dates before the announced them. This overlap cannot have been planned or wanted by the EBU.
