Witloof Bay were formed in 2005 by six friends, who shared a passion for music. The group consists of 4 men and 2 women, all with diverse muiscal backgrounds. The group cites acts such as The Real Group, Take 6 and The Swingle Singers as their inspiration. They come from both the Walloon and Flemish parts of Belgium and thus are able to represent a truly united country, ironic, given the present political predicament the country is in. Their vibrant acapella style has led them to play in numerous countries, such as Belgium, Italy, France, Sweden, Germany and the UK. They also have concerts coming up in Finland, Estonia and Argentina!
Benoît Giaux sings baritone in the group. He has a degree in piano and singing and currently teaches singing alongside performing as a soloist and directing a choir. RoxorLoops is the beatbox of the band, providing astounding sound effects, his talents having won him global recognition. He has even been proclaimed the world vice champion within his field! Florence Huby sings alto in the group and similarly has a degree in singing and choral conducting. She also makes a living from treaching and conducting various high profile choirs in her native Belgium. Étienne Debaisieux sings bass with Witloof Bay, and also sings with the Namur chamber choir.
Nicolas Dorian is the tenor of the group, also with a background from singing studies, qualifying from the Royal Academy of Music in London. Alexia Saffery is the newest addition and the other woman of the group, a trained soprano with a degree in singing, and who also sings in the Jazz Infinity group. She also performs alongside Étienne in the Namur chamber choir.
According to the group, it was Florence who first came with the idea of Witloof Bay entering the Belgian selection, and apparently the other members only needed half an hour to come to the same decision! With this year being the 25th anniversary of the only Belgian victory, the members would consider it a huge honour to take home the trophy and say that this is going to be the biggest party they’ve ever had!
