The 22 Campioni artists of Sanremo 2017 – one of them will go to Kyiv

This evening on prime time TV from Sanremo’s Villa Ormond, Carlo Conti revealed the names of the 22 artists taking part in the Campioni division of the upcoming Sanremo. All of them are possible Italian entrants for Eurovision 2017 in Kyiv.

After months of speculation, rumours and potential lists from non selected artists, it was at last time to find out the 22 artists that will compete in the upcoming Sanremo music festival. Despite the fact that, according to the rules of Sanremo 2017, this year’s Campioni division was supposed to have to have only 20 candidates, Carlo Conti surprised us as he revealed that there will be 22 artists. Selecting 20 was simply too hard! The interesting fact was that the chosen artists themselves didn’t know yet if they were chosen or not, until the moment Carlo Conti announced their names in Sara Sanremo show.

Along with the announcement of the 22 Campioni artists today we had the semifinals for the Newcomers category. Out of 561 submissions Carlo Conti and the jury of experts chose 12 songs to compete in tonight’s show. Six of them qualified for the Newcomers section of Sanremo 2017. In addition to these 6 qualifies, 2 more songs will be added in the Giovanni list of the upcoming Sanremo, through the AreaSanremo contest. Out of 414 submissions, 8 songs fought today for the 2 remaining spots in Newcommers division. In theory also these are possible Eurovision entries, if the eventual Campioni winner declines the right to go to the Eurovision Song Contest, just like Stadio did this year.

Nuove Proposte

In the Nuove Proposte section of the contest, a total of 8 artists will perform their own songs and compete over the course of 3 nights.

The contest will start with semi-final duels, with 4 acts competing on night 2 and 4 acts competing on night 3. The winners from each of the duels will then move forward to the final of the contest.

The 4 finalists will perform their songs to the public once again who will then go on to decide the winner of Nuove Proposte on night 4 of Sanremo.

Campioni

The Campioni section of the contest will run throughout the full 5 nights of the Sanremo Music Festvial, consisting of a total of 22 participants.

Night 1 will see the 22 acts performing their entries to the public for the first time, running throughout the entire evening. An initial vote will take place, continuing into the second and third nights of the contest.

The 22 acts will then be split up, with 11 performing on night 2 and 11 performing on night 3. The vote will continue with 14 moving forward directly to the final. The 8 non-qualifiers will appear in the repechage on night 4.

Night 4 will see the 14 direct finalists perform a cover of a well-known Italian hit, with the winner going on to win the Cover Award of the competition. The 8 repechage acts will also perform once again with a newly-set vote, with the top 3 joining the 14 direct qualifiers in the final.

The 17 finalists will perform for a final time on the fifth and final night of Sanremo 2017 where the vote will take place once again. The winner of the combined public/jury votes will be crowned the winner of the Sanremo Music Festival 2017.

The winner of the Campioni section of Sanremo 2017 will be offered the opportunity to represent Italy at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. If the Sanremo winner declines the offer, RAI will go on to select another Sanremo participant to represent the nation at the Kyiv-hosted competition in May.

Sanremo 2017 dates

Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest

Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 41 times since making its debut in 1956. It was one of only seven countries that competed in the very first contest. Italy competed frequently in the contest until 1997. After a fourteen-year absence, the country returned for the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, with a respectable second place achieved by Raphael Gualazzi and Madness of Love. Italy has won the contest twice (1964 and 1990).

Along with Germany, France, Spain and the United Kingdom, Italy is one of the Big 5 who are automatically allowed to participate in the grand final because of their contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest, both with a substantial amount of viewers and economically.

This year in Stockholm, RAI had appointed the runner-up of Sanremo 2016 Francesca Michielin, as the Italian representative. Michielin performed a bilingual Italian and English version of her Sanremo entry at the Eurovision Song Contest and placed sixteenth out of the 26 participating countries with 124 points.
